BVL Veteran Spotlight: Mark Sequerth

In honor of BVL Month, we're highlighting a few honorable veterans who are special to Spare Time Texas. For anyone who's participated in our Bowling Leagues or just visited our Spare Time Texas location in Pflugerville, there’s a good chance you may have met Mark Sequerth.

Mark Sequerth served in the United States Navy for over 17 years. He knew from an early age (around 7 or 8 years old) that he wanted to be a sailor, finally enlisting in 1976. “I trained to be an Electronics Technician. The Navy’s training in this area is exceptional.”

“It was the greatest honor of my life to be a sailor.”

When asked about the difficulties of entering into military service, he mentions some aspects of the Navy that were indeed difficult, like long-term family separation and the fact that the military is a dangerous job. However, he confirms that the relationships built with Shipmates have lasted a lifetime.

"One of the most challenging jobs you can have is that of Company Commander in RTC (Recruit Training Command). But, I think that job made me a much better leader. So, if I could do it again I would…tomorrow."
- Mark Sequerth

Mark served multiple vessels including the USS Sides (FFG-14), the USS George Philip (FFG-12), and the USS Missouri (BB 63). During the Gulf War, he was attached to the 1st Marine Div. to work on their Communications gear. He also did one tour at Great Lakes Naval Station (Camp Porter) RTC.

“I loved the whole experience, and as I’ve stated, I would do it again tomorrow,” Mark says. “When young people ask me if they should join I always respond with an emphatic yes.” He feels that one of the most rewarding aspects is the comradeship that one forms with people of different backgrounds and cultures. “It really teaches you that the differences don’t separate us, but join us because we are living a shared experience.”

Mark acknowledges his service experience profoundly impacted who he is today. “I don’t think I would be where I am without it. I learned the valuable lessons of teamwork and leadership.”

Mark is very open about his service and also loves talking to other Veterans about their service, whether it’s during weekly league bowling play or playful banter outside of Spare Time Texas. “All the branches tease each other, but it’s in the spirit of jest and always good-natured.”

Mark is also a valued member of our Spare Time Texas family, as he worked as a part of our team for many years, including serving as a manager. So, if you happen to spot Mark during one of your visits, be sure to say hi and thank him for his service!
